This all may seem vague so I wish to precursor it by stating one thing clearly: post things to this blog. Add what ever you can whenever you can. Let what comes before it and after it influence your own contribution or not. Thank you for your participation.

Okay so...

This thing will serve as an open archive. Take and add what you can whenever possible. Cite your contributions and they in turn will be cited. We are creating together and autonomously. There is no goal, no finish. We can help each other do things, or get help here.

Another stupid art project.

Conflict Resolution Conflict

Do What You Can participated in the second annual Feed the Birds Cabaret at Buddies and Bad Times Theatre in Toronto on December 23rd 2011. The performers were Nick Augustin, Max Chandler, Benjamin Kamino, Max Kelly and Kit Weyman. The performance created by Max Kelly and Max Chandler was influenced by the Tzotzil music of Chumala, Chiapas and Bread & Puppets Theatre. Essentially we wanted to create a sense of chaos and disharmony that was temporarily lifted by the presence of a man in a purple linen dress with an eye patch.
I wanted the men to dance like drunks in a Mexican brothel and the man in the dress to dance just as though he's just regained his vision. Hopefully we upload a clip of it soon. The piece was entitled Conflict Resolution Conflict.

Riots are bad, do not participate in them. Watch them instead for their spectacular nature. Like the theatre of political speeches and hockey fights.

Pass Away Now. Series 1.

-The Wellington Switch Tower, Saturday May 28th, 2011.

This was the first, trial run, of the ‘pass away now’ initiative.

The site.

The Wellington switch tower is a three story high edifice that sits aside the Peel Basin in Montreal. It’s main purpose was to control the signaling of trains and the Wellington train bridge. It has been abandoned for an unknown amount of time and with our last visit it looks as though it will be demolished soon.

The visit.

We arrived and to our surprise the door has been busted open. Inside we found a photographer taking model shots of a sweet looking blonde woman. They agreed to not disturb our ceremony on the top floor after they had a go at the space for headshots. They took a long time.

When they left we started immediately. We pieced together a shrine for the space as we sang a song about beauty. Some people cleaned while others built. White sage was burned. Max began the ceremony by introducing us to the space, he asked for it’s solem passing. We had a moment of silence. Max ranted a speech to honour the space and to help it pass smoothly into the wild. While he did this we all died very slowly. Max came around and anointed our bodies with flours and sugar. We were revieved and stood together around the shrine. We passed a flask of whiskey in silence and lit a fire work to celebrate the passing. We left the shire erect.

The Proposal for "pass away now"

Do what you can/Pass away now.

Poetic[as] :

This place was left for the good of infrastructure, a crumbling economy or modernity’s heartless push forward. Rust of iron, crumbled paint and !!rotting wood – decaying flesh of a forgotten space once loved, once touched often. !!1!!

How can these spaces pass without rite - Without wake? They were just as alive as we now.

We must lay them to sleep.

They must know their death; they must understand the necessity of their inactivity as fuel for our progression. For change, destructive innovation. !!

Keep still space; pass now knowing you served with great heart those that abided in you.

Your beauty is felt in your decay,!! the glory you once held has not gone, IT will never go, it will always remember the actions and breath that stood in your volume.

Lord bless this space. Let it pass to your merciful hands without fear, without anger. Enrich it’s absence with understanding of it’s worth through emptiness. This inflated stillness that now enwraps our bodies.

Pass now, space. Know your immortality is rich with decay.

Prose[aic] :

These will be funerals for abandoned spaces. These spaces are marks left by modernity, left by progress. Some spaces wait to be reformed; others remain as buffers, safety zones abandoned as to surround chaos with stillness.

We will serve these spaces their rites and wakes. Ritualize their decay with candles, song, speech, gesture and drink. We will attempt a proper funeral for the space that provides with nothing, a necessary nothing, a beautiful nothing.

The plan:

We go to the space. We enter it. We dress it for ritual. We pay our respects; the preacher serves it its rites. We take time to feel the space pass. We drink. We wake the space. We clean. We leave…. One trace.

The list:

One white suit – the preacher. (Hopefully Max Kelly or Nader Hasan… or anyone).

10 black suits – the party. (Anyone interested).

Two bottles of Jameson.

Two cases of beer.

A camera man – the documentarien (Hopefully Alexander Kamino).

Anyone down?

Nuit Blanche at 141 Ann. Montreal.

Nuit Blanche at 141 Ann in Griffintown

Thank you to CoMotion Farm for hosting us.

Well, we played on nuit blanche in the open space of factory walls and mish-mashed artworks strewn about. On a white floor of paper we came together without rehearsal to perform simultaneous individual acts, one of us for the first time, one with practise and one with ownership. All devoted to destruction we made no claims to perfection nor presented ideological impressions. We did things at the same time that we were relatively good at. The cohesion for the work was only the content of our focus with these things. So... ya pictures is all we got left.

Nuit Blanche at 141 Ann in Griffintown

be-lated nuit blanche critique

i read many books on Art Theory, stage relantionship, spectacle and torture
(foucault is very popular with the young people)
While Ben beats himself with his fist. and breaks stereos with a baseball bat.

M. Kelly came on half way with a plastic smile playing the banjo.

There were many reactions many frowns, one woman said "i can't hear"
"why doesn't he talk louder" "shhhh- this is Art"
other comments: "well, atleast it was interesting."
"funny and scary"

Their ears were straining for an explanation through words.
There was no sacred meaning.
You are invited to an empty conference, you are the guest lecturer.
These are men who have no opinions that expand outside the borders of the stage.
There are no undercurrents.
No comments on the Media.
Some sort of sacrilege initiation rite?
You are invited to interpret however you like.
There is nothing behind: a moving mouth
a beating fist
a strumming banjo
pop music

These are young men without a message to send you.
Does this pose a problem?
They would like you to know they have the gumtion to grasp the molotov
but once its flaming in their hands they know not where to throw it. perhaps.
